History of Eagles Cove Estates
Eagles Cove

Mr. Bert Holland, a logging contractor, discovered the site many years ago. The following is a brief history of the site, in the words of Mr. Holland.

"For 20 years I have been traveling back and forth to work in the Islands, north of Campbell River. Discovery Passage is the main route to northern B.C. and Alaska for cruise ships, tug boats and the fishing fleet from Vancouver."

"In 1983, I started out early for my logging camp on East Thurlow. It wasn't long before I ran into heavy fog and the foghorns from fishing boats were blowing all around me. I pulled into a bay and began to jig for cod.I caught my limit! As the fog lifted I could see very large Douglas fir trees, just north of the Bay. I went ashore and found a stand of 1000-year-old fir trees. The largest was 27 feet around at chest high and had an eagle's nest in the top branches. The trees were so dense that the sun never filtered down to the base and there was no small growth beneath them. I walked around a spring fed swamp and what looked like a solid rock mountain, turned into a beautiful fir filled valley with a second growth stand of trees - 150 ft tall"!!!

"I heard water running to the west, so I went there and found a beautiful year round creek. It split into two channels, forming an island in the middle, before rejoining as it neared the ocean. I am presently working with Fisheries and Oceans to develop a salmon spawning area on one side of the channel. There is no spawning in this creek at present due to the high water flows in the winter months, that would flush the salmon eggs out".

"When I came back to my boat, I had a whole new direction in life.to turn this natural forested area into a park for all the people to see and enjoy. Forests are for trees, Cities are for people - Eagles Cove Estates is for all".

Q: How do I get to Eagles Cove Estates?

A: Eagles Cove Estates is located at McMullen Point on beautiful Vancouver Island. You can get there by driving north from Campbell River, via Highway 19, to Roberts Lake (approx. 30 km/18 miles). At the north end of Roberts Lake, turn right on the Elk Bay Forestry Road and follow the "fish" signs to Eagles Cove Estates.

The trip off Highway 19, along Elk Bay Forestry Road is approx. 19km/12 miles. The road is maintained by the B.C. Forestry Service and is used by local logging operators.

So during working hours
PLEASE WATCH OUT FOR LOGGING TRUCKS

Also, remember to watch out for DEER, ELK, BEARS and other WILDLIFE as you journey. Sometimes the road can be "a little rough", but the trip will be well worth it!
